How many PA programs should you apply to?

By The Prereq Club, a pre-PA student and her mom (not PAs or admissions advisers). Every program rule below names its source and the month we checked it: October 2026.

Short answer

Students who started PA school in 2022 and answered PAEA's survey applied to a median of 8 programs. Applying to 8 programs costs $640 in CASPA fees alone for 2026–27. There's no number that guarantees a seat, so the right count depends on how well you match each program's requirements and how much you can spend.

What the data show

Interviews offered to those studentsMedian 3 (mean 3.6)PAEA Student Report 6
Programs per applicant, 2024–25 cycle (all applicants)8.45PAEA

The 2022 figures come only from students who were admitted and answered the survey. Applicants who weren't admitted aren't in it and likely had fewer interviews.

A 2021 study of all 27,282 applicants in the 2017–18 CASPA cycle, which focused on Black applicants, found that after accounting for grades, experience and demographics, applying to more programs was linked to a higher chance of starting PA school. The biggest gains came between 2 and 7 applications, and there was no added benefit beyond 16 (beyond 7 for Black applicants). That's an association from one cycle, not a promise: more applications only help if you meet each program's requirements.

What it costs

ProgramsCASPA fees (2026–27)
1$185
5$185 + 4 × $65 = $445
8$185 + 7 × $65 = $640
10$185 + 9 × $65 = $770
12$185 + 11 × $65 = $900

CASPA fees only. Some programs add their own supplemental fee (Duke's was $70 for the 2025–26 cycle; its page hadn't been updated for 2026–27 when we checked), and interviews, tests and deposits can add more. CASPA's 2026–27 fee waivers ran out in September 2026. See how much CASPA costs.

How to build your list

  1. Cut programs you don't qualify for first. Check each one's GPA minimums, required hours, prerequisites and time limits, letter rules and deadline. An application that misses a requirement is money spent for nothing.
  2. Compare yourself with each program's admitted students, where the program publishes them, not just its minimums.
  3. Check deadlines and when your application must be verified. Some programs require a verified application by the deadline. OHSU says verification can take up to two weeks, and Northwestern advises submitting at least a month before its deadline.
  4. Set a budget, including supplemental fees, then decide your number. If your budget allows only one or two programs, know that's where the 2021 study saw adding programs matter most.
  5. Apply early in the cycle if your application is ready; some programs, like OHSU, review applications on a rolling basis.
