Does pharmacy tech count for PA school?
It depends heavily on the program. Of the six programs we checked, three count pharmacy technician work toward their patient care hours (Quinnipiac, UW MEDEX and Charleston Southern) and three don't (UNC Chapel Hill, Duke and USC Keck). Check every school on your list before you count on pharmacy tech hours.
What CASPA says
CASPA's Healthcare Experience covers work in health care where you are not directly responsible for a patient's care, and its examples include "filling prescriptions." CASPA says each program's definitions vary, so programs decide whether these hours count toward their requirement.
Six programs, side by side
| Program | Pharmacy tech hours? | What the page says |
|---|---|---|
| Quinnipiac current catalog | Count | "pharmacy technician" is on its list of hands-on experiences toward its 2,000 hours |
| UW MEDEX Northwest 2026–27 | Count | "Pharmacy Technician" is listed under accepted allied health technicians (paid hours only) |
| Charleston Southern page checked Oct 2026 | Count | "Pharmacy Technician" is on its list of acceptable direct patient care |
| UNC Chapel Hill Jan 2027 entry cycle | Don't count | "Hospital or retail pharmacy technician" is listed as not qualifying |
| Duke 2026–27 | Don't count | "Pharmacy technician" is not accepted toward its 1,000 hours |
| USC Keck from the 2026–27 cycle | Don't count | Pharmacy Technician "will no longer be accepted for patient care experience starting in the 2026-2027 application cycle" |
Examples, not a ranking. Rules can change from one cycle to the next (USC Keck changed its rule for 2026–27), so check each program's own page and note the date you checked.
If you work as a pharmacy tech, do this
- Sort your school list into programs that count pharmacy tech hours and programs that don't.
- If a program on your list doesn't count them, plan a second, hands-on job (for example CNA, EMT or phlebotomy) so you meet its minimum.
- Still list your pharmacy tech work on CASPA. It's real healthcare experience even where it doesn't count toward a program's minimum.
- Re-check every year. USC Keck's change shows programs do drop roles from their lists.
